We are an effort rooted in the understanding of intersectionality.
Intersectionality is a concept that has been applied to various social justice movements. It recognizes that individuals possess multiple social identities and that these identities intersect, interact, and influence each other, shaping a person's experiences and perspectives.
Traditionally, social analysis focused on single-axis identities, such as race, gender, or class, examining them separately. However, intersectionality highlights the interconnectedness of these identities and emphasizes that individuals experience privilege or oppression based on the combination of their various social positions.
For example, a black woman may face unique forms of discrimination that are different from those experienced by a white woman or a black man. By considering both race and gender, intersectionality acknowledges that the experiences of these individuals are shaped by the intersection of multiple forms of oppression, creating a distinct set of challenges and disadvantages.
Intersectionality also recognizes that power dynamics exist within social structures and institutions. It highlights that individuals with multiple marginalized identities may experience compounded disadvantages due to the interplay of various forms of discrimination, while those with multiple privileged identities may benefit from multiple advantages.
Moreover, intersectionality underscores the importance of considering the experiences and perspectives of individuals who occupy multiple social positions. It encourages acknowledging the complexity of identity and recognizes that social issues cannot be adequately addressed by focusing solely on a single aspect of identity or form of oppression.
In practice, intersectionality guides activists, scholars, and policymakers to consider the ways in which different social identities intersect and how they shape people's experiences. By recognizing the complexity of these intersections, intersectionality seeks to foster inclusivity, promote social justice, and address systemic inequalities.
"It is no accident that the states that would forbid a teenager from transitioning are the same that would compel that teenager to give birth; it is no accident that the states with the greatest control over what women do with their reproductive organs are the ones where women’s restrooms have become sites of surveillance and control, with patrons, cis and trans alike, subjected to invasive and degrading inquisitions as to whether they are conforming sufficiently to the demands of femininity. That Nebraska combined these two projects into one bill, then, is less inventive than it is a dropping of pretense: the anti-feminist movement is anti-trans, and the anti-trans panic is at its core anti-feminist." https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/may/24/rightwing-abortion-transgender-care-gender-hierarchy
"There is absolutely no doubt in my mind — zero — that what groups like Moms for Liberty and Parents Defending Education are doing is structural and aimed at the destruction and ultimate privatization of America's public school system," Cunningham, wrote by email. "These groups are communications operations and highly networked into The Daily Caller, Breitbart [and] Fox News. They have gotten educators fired and attacked online. They want to create chaos," he concluded, "to destroy trust in public education and draw funding away.""
